Effect of Age on the Expression of Cell Proliferation-Related PCNA and E2F Genes in Drosophila

Chung Hae-Young

Abstract
As aging is characterized by declines in physiological processes and rises in certain pathological situations, the effects of aging on cell proliferation have yielded confusing and contradictory results. Our previous study has shown that the ROS generation in the gut of flies is higher than in the whole body. In this study, we investigated the effect of aging on the expression of Drosophila proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and E2F(dE2F) gene through analyses of lacZ reporter expression level. Expressions of both PCNA and dE2F were declined in the whole body according as aging progresses, but significantly increased in the gut, especially hindgut and rectum. Our results suggest that these effects may be related with the high level of ROS generation in guts by aging.
